The objectives of the Formulation and Color Technician program are to train specialists in the field of colored products for the cosmetics, leather and paints, inks, and adhesives industries.
Program
The Formulation and Color Technical program is a French-taught program that lasts 10 to 12 months. Students follow a semester of courses and end the program with an internship in a company (4 to 6 months). The degree can be completed under one of the two following ways:
- Student status
- Apprenticeship status
Curriculum
The Formulation and Color Technician program offers a high-level curriculum that integrates a solid core foundation, followed by specialization in three distinct tracks: Cosmetics , Paints, Inks, and Adhesives , and Leather. This core foundation, which forms the basis of the training, is designed to equip students with the essential skills to understand the industrial and scientific processes behind product formulation. Students receive instruction in applied microbiology, polymers, physical chemistry, and standards and quality, enabling them to understand the complex interactions between ingredients and ensure the safety and performance of formulations. In addition, particular focus is given to eco-design, risk management in Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE), as well as integrating quality standards to ensure responsible products that meet industry requirements.
Cosmetics Track
The Cosmetics track focuses on the cosmetics industry, where students delve into specific areas such as sensory analysis, skin biology, and cosmetic raw materials. They are trained in European cosmetics regulations and gain knowledge of natural and organic products. Formulation courses cover a wide range of products, including skincare, makeup, and hygiene, allowing students to master the creation process while adhering to safety and performance criteria. The research project gives students the opportunity to work on innovations in product formulation, contributing to the evolution of the cosmetics industry.
Paints, Inks and Adhesives Track
The Paints, Inks, and Adhesives track stands out with its technical and practical approach, focusing on the formulation, manufacturing, and innovation of industrial products. Students learn to formulate and analyze raw materials used in paints and inks, while also familiarizing themselves with the regulations specific to these products. The program includes hands-on experience in paint production, as well as the creation of adhesives and inks, covering printing processes and industrial and decorative paints. This track enables students to develop technical and environmental solutions tailored to the industry’s needs, with specialized conferences to keep up with market developments. The research project encourages students to explore innovation, particularly in sustainability and product performance.
Leather Track
The Leather track is specifically designed for students who wish to work in the leather industry. Students gain in-depth knowledge of the raw materials used (animal hides), skin biology, and the defects that can affect leather quality. They are trained in leather transformation techniques, including river-tanning and currying, to ensure high-quality leather. The curriculum also covers leather characterization and finishing, as well as dyeing techniques, allowing students to personalize the aesthetic and physical properties of leather. The research project provides an opportunity to develop innovations in this field by exploring new techniques and applications for the leather industry.
Application and admission
Admission into the Formulator and Color Technician program is available through the study of your application file and an admissions interview.
Academic requirements
Students who have completed at least 2 to 3 years of university studies in chemistry (bachelor’s degree or equivalent) are eligible for an entry into the program.
Language requirements
A B2 level in French is required for this program. An official certificate is not required (the level is tested during the admissions interview), but is highly appreciated.
Admission process
Depending on your nationality and your country of residence, you can apply via ITECH Lyon’s platform or via the Études en France platform. For further details on the admission process, please read Admission for international students.
If you are a non-European student currently living outside of France, we strongly recommend that you submit your application between January and the end of April.
Tuition fees
Tuition fees are €5,500 for students enrolling in 2024. They can be paid in several installments throughout the year.
Career outcomes
The openings are of either of a technical nature (research & development laboratory – measurements & controls laboratory – production), a technical salesperson one or in customer assistance.
